Hey, Law Enforcement... wyd?
I want to start this off by saying that I am in no way, shape or form, anti-police or anti-law enforcement... but seriously, wyd? Today, I woke up to the news of yet another one of my black brothers being MURDERED over a petty "crime" and I seriously want to know, what are ya'll being trained to do? This is an honest question, no sass intended. In the army, they are trained to kill when deemed necessary. You're not going to see a Navy SEAL trying to "de-escalate" a terrorist. But police aren't Navy SEALs; their job is to protect and defend their citizens.. not just the citizens they identify with. A 2015 police brutality study done by The Counted and reported on by the Latin Post states that "when identifying demographics, the totals indicate that police killed black people at more than twice the rate of whites and Latinos. Plus, black people who were killed by police were significantly more likely to have been unarmed (Link to article- http://www.latinpost.com/articles/63569/20150702/police-brutality-statistics-killings-reach-1-100-2015s-end-report.htm)." Too often does the black community feel more helpless around law-enforcement than they do hopeful and this is a problem. And if you're about to comment something ignorant pertaining to telling the black race how we should feel about being murdered in the streets, please save it because it won't even be warranted with a response.
Now, don't get me wrong, I have the utmost respect for law-enforcement. They put their lives on the line everyday and they're the first people I'm going to call if my house get's broken into or if some crazy man tries to kidnap me. However, I can not tolerate the lack of regard some of them have for their training, to disarm, when it comes to black perpetrators. I KNOW it's a hard job, and I KNOW I can't fully understand all that a police officer goes through on a daily basis... but... I really... don't.. have to. It's like watching Simone Bile's or Gabby Douglas do a beam routine. I will never know how to do a round-off, back-layout-stepout on an object that's two inches in width and neither will most people. But if Simone or Gabby can't do one, that is a problem BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT THEY SPEND 20 HOURS A WEEK IN THE GYM TRAINING TO FREAKING DO. It's not a harsh criticism or a hard one to grasp. Here's a bright idea: if police aren't going to use their training to disarm black victims, then maybe they should stop being trained to disarm. They should just be trained to kill everyone that resisits them, yells at them, threatens them, looks threatening, all-a-dat. At least then, everyone would know, "don't mess with police or you'll wind up dead"... because, believe it or not, that's the conversation black parents have to have with their children everyday...
